In my search for a transparent optical compressor, I came across the Opto Stomp. It's optical, it's quiet, and it's subtle. It also exhibits an overall volume loss when the Comp control hits around 8. I'd say the sweet spot is just before this point.

In fact I'm tempted to get in there and replace the Comp pot with a different taper to make the sweet spot range more useable.

Probably a leave-on sort of pedal, but don't expect anything squishy. It is incredibly quiet, so it's on the board.
